We recently completed a dryer vent installation where the existing setup was a 20-foot run of white vinyl hose — and it was a serious safety concern.

replace vinyl dryer vent hose for metal

The vinyl duct was torn in multiple areas, sagging, and packed with lint. Years of trapped lint combined with restricted airflow had turned this dryer vent into what we often call a dryer fire waiting to happen. Unfortunately, this type of installation is still far more common than it should be.

Vinyl dryer hoses do not meet modern building or fire code requirements, especially for longer vent runs. They are easily damaged, prone to tearing, and their ribbed interior traps lint instead of allowing it to exit the home efficiently.

Why the Old Vinyl Dryer Vent Was Dangerous

The original vinyl duct created multiple hazards:

Severe lint buildup due to deep ridges and sagging sections

Restricted airflow, causing longer drying times and overheating

Torn and leaking ducting, releasing lint and moist air into surrounding areas

Non-code-compliant materials increasing fire risk

Excessive vent length with no support, worsening lint accumulation

As lint builds up inside vinyl ducts, it becomes highly combustible. Combined with heat from the dryer, this creates ideal conditions for a dryer fire.

The Proper Fix: Solid Metal Dryer Vent Installation

We removed the entire 20 feet of vinyl hose and replaced it with solid galvanized steel ductwork, installed correctly from the dryer connection to the exterior vent.

The new installation included:

Rigid metal ducting for smooth, unrestricted airflow

Properly supported sections to prevent sagging

Secure connections with no screws protruding into the airflow path

A layout designed to minimize resistance and lint accumulation

Galvanized steel ductwork allows lint to move through the system efficiently instead of sticking to the walls of the vent. This dramatically improves dryer performance and reduces long-term maintenance and fire risk.

Improved Safety, Efficiency, and Dryer Performance

After the installation was complete, we tested the system to confirm proper airflow. The improvement was immediate.

With the vinyl hose removed and replaced with solid metal ductwork:

Drying times were reduced

The dryer was no longer overheating

Airflow was strong and consistent

Fire risk was significantly reduced

This is a perfect example of how a dryer problem is often not the dryer itself, but the vent system connected to it.

Don’t Ignore Vinyl Dryer Vents

If your dryer vent uses white vinyl or foil ducting — especially over longer distances — it should be replaced. These materials deteriorate over time, trap lint, and pose a serious fire hazard.

At DryerVentInstallation.ca, we specialize in correcting unsafe dryer vent installations using code-approved metal ductwork, efficient layouts, and airflow testing to ensure the system is safe and performing as it should.

Replacing a dangerous vinyl dryer vent isn’t just an upgrade — it’s a critical safety improvement.

A properly installed dryer vent is critical for safety, efficiency, appliance lifespan, and energy costs. Unfortunately, many dryer vents are installed using shortcuts that create airflow restrictions, moisture problems, and serious fire risks.

At Dryer Vent Installation, we specialize in installing dryer vents the right way, using approved materials, efficient layouts, and post-installation airflow testing to make sure your dryer is truly “happy” with the setup.

What Does “Proper Dryer Vent Installation” Mean?

A correct dryer vent installation isn’t just about connecting a hose and punching a hole through the wall. It’s about designing a system that allows hot, moist air and lint to exit your home quickly and safely.

A properly installed dryer vent should include:

Galvanized steel ductwork inside walls and ceilings

Fully insulated ducting when running through unconditioned spaces like attics

Minimal elbows and turns to reduce airflow resistance

Short, direct vent runs whenever possible

No screws or obstructions inside the ductwork

A proper exterior vent cap designed for dryers (not screens or pest traps)

Anything less than this can lead to slow drying times, overheating, lint buildup, and premature dryer failure.

Why Galvanized Steel Ductwork Is Essential

Flexible foil or plastic ducting is still commonly used — and it’s one of the biggest mistakes we see.

Galvanized steel ductwork is the industry-recommended material for dryer vents because it:

Resists crushing and sagging

Allows lint to move smoothly instead of snagging

Withstands high temperatures safely

Meets building and fire code requirements

Inside walls and ceilings, rigid or semi-rigid galvanized steel is the only material we install. This ensures long-term reliability and keeps lint from collecting where you can’t see it.

Insulating Dryer Vents in Attics Matters

When a dryer vent runs through an attic, insulation is not optional — it’s critical.

Uninsulated dryer ducts in cold spaces cause condensation, which leads to:

Wet lint buildup

Reduced airflow

Mold risks

Corrosion inside the duct

Freezing in winter months

We properly insulate attic dryer vents to maintain consistent airflow temperature and prevent moisture issues that silently destroy poorly installed systems.

Fewer Elbows = Better Drying Performance

Every elbow, bend, or unnecessary detour in a dryer vent creates resistance. More resistance means:

Longer drying times

Higher energy use

Increased lint buildup

Strain on the dryer motor and heating element

Our installations focus on the shortest, straightest path possible with minimal turns. This not only improves efficiency but dramatically reduces future maintenance and fire risk.

Dryer Vent Installation Through the Roof

In some homes, the safest and most efficient route for a dryer vent is through the roof. This is especially common in townhomes, interior laundry rooms, finished basements, and layouts where long horizontal runs would severely restrict airflow.

Roof dryer vent installations must be done correctly — improper roof venting is one of the most common causes of lint buildup, water intrusion, and recurring airflow problems.

We install a high-quality, Canadian-made roof dryer vent that is specifically engineered for dryer exhaust. Its efficient, open design allows lint and moist air to exit freely, reducing turbulence and buildup inside the vent. Unlike older-style roof caps or screened vents, this design significantly reduces the frequency of roof dryer vent cleanings while maintaining excellent airflow.

Safety and efficiency are always the priority. Our roof dryer vent installations are:

Properly flashed and sealed to protect the roof

Connected using galvanized steel ductwork

Designed to minimize restrictions and lint accumulation

Tested after installation to ensure strong airflow

When installed correctly with the right materials, a roof dryer vent can be a safe, reliable, and long-lasting solution that keeps your dryer running efficiently and your home protected.

Why Testing After Installation Is Non-Negotiable

Here’s where most installers stop — and where we don’t.

A dryer vent can look correct and still perform poorly. That’s why we test airflow after every installation to confirm the system is working as intended.

Post-installation testing ensures:

Proper airflow levels

No hidden restrictions

The dryer is not overheating

Sensors and modern dryers are operating within safe limits

In short, we don’t guess — we verify.

The Hidden Costs of Improper Dryer Vent Installation

A poorly installed dryer vent can cost you far more than the installation itself. Common consequences include:

Repeated dryer breakdowns

Blown thermal fuses and heating elements

High utility bills

Clothes that never fully dry

Increased fire risk

Many of our calls come from homeowners who were told they need a new dryer, when the real issue is a bad vent install.

Dryer Vent Installation Done Right the First Time

Dryer Vent Installation Done Badly: A Recent Project Highlight

At Dryer Vent Installation, we recently encountered a serious safety issue caused by an improper dryer vent installation. The homeowners had two dryers and a range hood all connected to a single vent system using wye connectors. This type of setup is not only against building codes but also poses significant risks to the home and its occupants.

Why Proper Dryer Vent Installation Matters

Dryers should always have their own dedicated venting system. Sharing ductwork between dryers or with other appliances, such as range hoods, is a major fire hazard. When multiple devices share a single vent, lint buildup is accelerated, airflow becomes restricted, and heat accumulates in the ductwork. All of these factors dramatically increase the likelihood of a fire. Furthermore, shared ductwork can lead to moisture buildup, which causes mold and mildew, and even creates backdrafting, where exhaust flows back into the home instead of venting outside.

Improper dryer vent installation doesn’t just put your home at risk—it also reduces the efficiency of your dryer. Restricted airflow means your dryer has to work harder, leading to longer drying times, increased energy bills, and a shorter lifespan for your appliance.

Our Solution: Safe, Code-Compliant Dryer Vent Installation

To address this unsafe setup, our team at Dryer Vent Installation got to work by separating each appliance’s venting system. We drilled two new 4-inch holes in the home’s foundation, creating dedicated ductwork for both dryers and the range hood. This code-compliant solution ensures that each appliance has a direct pathway to vent exhaust safely outside the home.

By providing separate venting for each appliance, we eliminated the risks associated with shared ductwork, improved airflow, and ensured the safety and efficiency of the appliances. Proper dryer vent installation is critical to protecting your home and family from fire hazards and ensuring optimal appliance performance.

Putting Right A Bad Dryer Vent Installation

Here we walk through this recent bad dryer vent installation that was deemed acceptable by those who did the renovation for our customer.

Whilst having your range hood vent outside is not required by Ontario Building Code you should check the requirements manufacturer of your gas range lays down in the manual. Almost all range hood manufacturers recommend that your range hood be vented outdoors for best results. With a gas cook top you really should be installing a range hood instead of a over the range microwave, be sure that you get the correct clearance above the gas cooktop typically 30″ clearance to combustibles above.

Grease and cooking smells as well as products of combustion are better off leaving your home than hanging around making the place smell greasy and stale. Kitchen vent installation to the outside will make sure your kitchens smelly, greasy and occasionally burnt odours will be properly venting outdoors. It is crucial that the correct size ductwork is used to make sure your range hood is running correctly. The correct size of ductwork for your kitchen range hood vent will be according to the specs provided by manufacturer of the kitchen range fan.

Best Material to Use For Kitchen Vent Installation

When having a kitchen vent installed it is best practice to use solid galvanized steel like all the other ductwork in your home, semi rigid can be used but never use the slinky style hose as this is a grease trap and could cause grease to drip back onto the top of your stove and cause a fire.

Here are rough guidelines to the best size duct to use when installing a kitchen vent.
The Correct Size Vent For Your Kitchen Exhaust System

Below are some suggestions to follow depending on the CFM output of your Range Hood or Vent Hood.

Ductwork Sizes for Kitchen Vent

0 – 400 CFM The minimum exhaust duct size of 4” inches, recommended vent duct size of 6” inches

401 – 600 CFM The minimum vent duct size of 6” inches, recommended exhaust duct size of 8” inches

601 – 900 CFM The minimum vent duct size of 7” inches, recommended exhaust duct size of 8” – 10” inches

901- 1200 CFM The minimum vent duct size of 8” inches, recommended exhaust duct size of 10” – 12” inches

1200 CFM + this totally depends on the type of motor and how long the ductwork runs, but at least a 10” diameter exhaust duct is required and 12” is recommended.

Ontario Gas Code For Clearance of Range Hood or Cabinets

Ontario Code for clearance above a gas range cook top for either the range hood or cabinets is listed below, also check the spec’s for the gas range and the range hood

Clause 7.32.4 – Except where permitted by Clauses 4.13.2 and 7.32.5 to 7.32.7, a residential type range shall have the following minimum clearances to combustible material:
(a) above – 30″ (750mm)
(b) front – 48″ (1200mm)
(c) back & sides – 6″ (150mm)

Clause 4.13.2 – The clearances to combustible material specified in Clause 7 shall not be reduced unless
(a) such reduced clearance is certified as safe by a nationally recognized certification organization acceptable to the authority having jurisdiction, and so marked on the appliance nameplate; or
(b) protection is provided for the combustible material, and such protection and such reduced clearance are in accordance with Table 4.1

Clause 7.32.5 – A residential-type range certified for zero side and rear clearances may be installed with zero side clearance from combustible material, provided that there is a 1″ (25mm) clearance at the back and a 28 MSG (0.3mm) sheet metal shield on the side walls spaced out a minimum of 0.25″ (6mm). The shield shall extend from the rear wall to the front edge of the range and from 5″ (125mm) below to 30″ (750mm) above the cooking surface.

Clause 7.32.6 – A new residential-type range shall be installed in accordance with its certified clearances from combustible material as specified on the appliance rating plate.

Clause 7.32.7 – When the underside of the combustible material above a residential-type range is protected with insulating millboard at least 0.25″ (6mm) thick covered with sheet metal not less than 28 MSG (0.3mm), the clearance above the range as specified in Clause 7.32.4 may be reduced to 24″ (600mm).

More often than not we see small starts of fires inside dryers! How this happens is pretty simple, the lint cannot escape as quickly as the dryer is trying to blow it outside. This causes the lint to start to build up inside the dryer itself. Inside the dryer there is a heating element that’s enclosed in a housing but lint settles on top of the element housing and starts smouldering away.

How This Dryer Became Fire Waiting To Burst In To Flames

Second floor laundry rooms are a delight to most home owners, they offer convenience and practicality, but there are some downsides. With this dryer the upstairs laundry room had a dryer vent that went up to the roof that was 3 stories high! They had over the last few years had a chimney sweep clean out the dryer vent, however they had not cleared the end of the dryer vent as that’s where the lint starts to build up, compacts and forms a plug.

Roof vent used for dryer opened up

When the roofers are putting roof vents on the roof they are not always aware that the vent is for a dryer vent thus a normal roof vent is used. This model has a tight screen that holds the lint in, forming a tight plug to stop the lint escaping, making the dryer work harder to dry each load.

Because the lint cannot escape it starts to settle inside the dryer around the heating element and on the element housing. This is how a dryer fire can happen, all this lint next to a heating element that’s glowing red hot is a recipe for a dryer fire.

Keep Safe Clean Your Dryer Vent Regularly, the dryer manufacturers recommend every 2 years that both the dryer vent gets cleaned and every few years that the inside of the dryer be cleaned professionally. Dryer Vent Installation offers professional dryer vent cleaning and dryer cleaning.

sense if your dryer vent has an excessively long run from the dryer to the outside vent cap. Also if your dryer shares the line with a bathroom fan or any other vent it should be rerouted to have it’s standalone, your dryer vent should only have the dryer attached!

Can Your Dryer and Bathroom Fan Share a Vent?

No they cannot share the same vent! This is a fire waiting to happen as dryer lint will make it’s way through the duct work towards the bathroom fan, event with a one way damper installed. We recently met a family who had a basement fire because the dryer and bathroom fan were sharing the same vent line to the outside world. The lint had built up inside the bathroom fan and this eventually caused the fan motor to seize, over heat and the lint ignited!

Proper Dryer Vent Installation Should Use Solid Metal Duct Work

Dryers and bathroom fans cannot share the same line

So many times we see old vinyl hose used for the whole length this is no longer an approved method as lint and moisture accumulates, causing sagging and plugging. Also over time the vinyl deteriorates and to make things worse if there was a dryer fire the vinyl will ignite, spreading into the walls and ceiling.

Metal duct work is the best option as its rigid, maintains 4″ at all times and should a dryer fire take place it will hopefully remain inside the duct work and burn itself out. It is also easier to clean the lint out a recommended task that should be carried out every 2 years.

“How To Lower Your Bills And Reduce The Risk Of A Dryer Fire, Saving You Time AND Money!”

Revealed! Oakville homeowner lowered his utility bill by $55 each month, simple process that all homeowners should be doing to save money and keep their home and family safe, look below to find out…

Dryer vent cleaning and proper dryer vent installation is an essential part of regular home maintenance that many of us forget until it is simply too late. Dryer vents get clogged with lint, critters and even birds’ nests which can quickly lead to increased drying times and possibly cause a dryer fire. Most homeowners are completely unaware that lint build up in dryer vents are even more dangerous than fireplace chimneys, leading to substantially more home fires than we might imagine.

Dryer Vent Cleaning Will

Significantly lower your electric bills

Give you more peace of mind

Eliminate your worries of any fire hazards

Speed up drying time

Save you more time and money

Proper dryer vent installation and regular dryer vent cleaning should always be completed by an experienced dryer exhaust professional. Simply cleaning out the lint trap is not enough to prevent lint build up through the dryer duct, the removable lint trap only captures 30% of the lint the rest is vented through to the outside.

Dryer manufacturers recommend getting your dryer and dryer vent cleaned, Yes they warn us!

The manufacturers of our clothes dryers have been warning homeowners on the dangers of the products that they sell. While nearly every instructional manual will always alert the buyer of the importance of regular maintenance and consistent cleaning of the lint traps between each wash, few of these manuals go on to explain the absolute necessity for proper and professional dryer vent cleaning and correct dryer vent installation. Did you know: 87% of dryer hoses connecting the dryer to the wall are WRONG? Check the back of your dryer, you’ll see a big warning label saying not to use “Thin foil or Plastic hose” yet most homes use them and all the box stores have them in the dryer vent area

Dryer vent cleaning and proper dryer vent installation saves lives!

The standard lint traps in our dryers do not always catch 100% its only 30% of the debris and combustible lint that result from the tumbling of our clothes and fabric softener sheets in our machines. Some of this lint and debris will automatically make its way down through the duct of the dryer vent system that runs to the outside of the home. Homeowners automatically assume that all of this debris is eventually blown outside into the open air through the ventilation process, but this is not always the case. Some of this lint will become trapped, and accumulate within the confined spaces of the vent, becoming a fire trap of massive proportions. Last year alone, over 15,000 home fires were the result of improper or neglected dryer vent cleaning and installation. When the dryer vent becomes restricted from lint build up, the dryer cannot exhaust the lint as fast as it is produced. This then leads to lint settling inside the dryer cabinet and on and around the dryer element, if the lint ignites then poof a dryer fire can start.

Dryer vent installation has changed a great deal in recent years!

With the newer homes being built today, many of these dryer vent systems are becoming increasingly longer. Only decades ago, the dryer vents were usually only a few feet in length, close to the outside wall. Today, these dryer vent installs can run perhaps 15 to 30 feet long with lots of “twists and turns”. It is nearly impossible for all of the lint, and combustible materials to make their way through these extremely long distances. With these longer dryer vent lengths, homeowners should definitely be very aware of how essential regular dryer vent cleaning can be. Installation of new vent systems would always be completed by a reputable professional.

“ I highly recommend dryer Vent cleaner.ca to keep your dryer running more efficiently and to prevent fires from lint buildup.”

Dryer vent cleaning and correct dryer vent installation saves money!

Clogged dryer vents will essentially cause your dryer to work much, much harder. Over time, you may begin to notice that the drying time of your clothes may begin to increase drastically. You may even need to run your clothes through two or more cycles in order to get them thoroughly dry. This results in enormous utility bills that can increase by as much as 25% per month. Regularly scheduled dryer vent cleaning will also keep you from having to replace those very expensive dryer appliances more frequently. These ventilation systems should always be inspected by a reputable professional at least once per year, saving you time and money in the long term.

Tips for dryer vent installation and cleaning.

Always remember to clean the dryer lint traps before and after each load.If the lint filter is damaged or ripped, replace it immediately.

At least once per month, remove and clean your dryer lint traps with soap and water in order to remove any remaining residue left behind by clothes and fabric softener sheets.

Homeowners should self-inspect the outside vent cap on a regular basis.

Ensure you have the correct hose connecting your dryer to the wall, never should anything other than solid duct work be used inside walls or ceilings.

Vacuum the lint that falls beneath and behind the dryer unit at least once per month.Professional dryer vent cleaning and inspections should occur at least once per year by reputable and certified technician.

In cases where your drying machine is in need of mechanical repair, these machines should always be serviced and cleaned by factory authorized professional appliance repair specialist.

Avoid placing any clothes or materials into your dryer machines that have absorbed any type of flammable liquids or materials. This will only increase the chances of a home fire even more drastically.

For new homeowners who have recently relocated into a new home, always have your dryer and dryer vents immediately inspected and cleaned by a reputable professional
